One of the Biggest Causes of Stress Revealed.
Experts say that stress comes from 5 different sources: Environmental, Major life events, Physical stress, Internal, and Lifestyle choices.
But, I think that we are forgetting something. We are forgetting one variable, a cause that is not researched much, a variable that I believe is one of the biggest causes of stress in today's society:
And no, I don't mean the drug "speed", what I mean is the speed of change. The speed with which everything is changing.
You may know that a simple definition of stress is that stress is anything that pushes your body out of normal function. Your body then needs to adapt to change.
And change, we have plenty.

Well, things are definitely speeding up. So, what does this have to do with the biggest causes of stress?
Imagine a spring coil. It has a build in "innate" mechanism to spring back after it has been stressed (pulled). So does your body. You have an innate mechanism called GAS (General Adaptation Syndrome) to respond to stress.
But what happens to the spring coil after it has been pulled and pulled and pulled? It gradually looses its ability to spring back. So does your body. The body becomes less and less able to adapt and various symptoms of stress begin to pop up.
The speed of change in our society places tremendous demands on our bodies. We have to adapt constantly. That's why I believe it is one of the biggest causes of stress.
So, if speed is the cause of stress, then slowing down should be the antidote. Exactly. That's what we need to learn to practice. Slowing down.
While, we may not be able to slow down the creation and our society, we can slow down our own bodies and our minds. A good start are these three instant relaxation exercises.
