Through my search, I learned much about TM and how it is practiced. As you continue reading this article, you can avoid time consuming research and directly benefit from what I learned about TM. So, lets get started.
What is transcendental meditation?
TM is a technique for reducing stress and expanding awareness. It is neither a religion nor a philosophy. TM is simply a mantra meditation.
TM was popularized in the West in the 1960s by yogi Maharishi Mahesh, who claimed that anyone can learn to meditate.
What is needed to practice transcendental meditation?
As with any other meditation techniques, five components are needed for TM:
- Time you need to set aside 15-20 minutes twice a day.
- A quiet place you need a place where you know you will not be disturbed.
- Comfortable position sitting in a chair with your eyes closed.
- Object of attention in TM your object of attention is a mantra.
- Passive attitude.
Reasons to practice transcendental meditation
A lot of research has been done on the effects of TM. Here are some of the findings1:
- Increase in IQ
- Increase in creativity
- Reduced blood pressure
- Reduced anxiety and emotional instability
- Improved sleep
- Less depression
- Decreased smoking and drinking
Through my search, I learned a lot about TM. But when it comes to free lessons on transcendental mediation, my search was fruitless.
I spend a lot of time and talked to many people, but TM seems to be closely guarded. I found, that it is impossible to get free lessons on transcendental meditation, because according to the official TM web site, you can only learn this from a qualified instructor. I could not find a single person who will give me free lessons on transcendental mediation.
My conclusion was that learning TM is expensive.
Hmm. But I wanted to meditate. I wanted a technique that will help me to relieve stress and to create a sense of well-being in my body and mind.
