Mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) was created by John-Kabat Zinn and his colleagues at the Stress Reduction Clinic at University of Massachusetts Medical Center.
Mindfulness blends concentration with receptive awareness and is becoming perhaps the most popular of all meditation techniques in the West.
MBSR program is being used in many healthcare settings, including hospitals.
It is a complete program where you learn to connect to your body, emotions, sensations, and your thoughts. Through this connection and awareness, you gain knowledge and wisdom of your patterns, your worries, and your stresses.
How can you get stress relief through becoming more aware?
What comes to awareness, can change. Most of our long term patterns are unconscious. Once we become conscious of them, they loose their power - we now have a choice how to act, instead of reacting unconsciously.
That is the power of mindfulness based stress reduction. Once you learn to be present and mindful of the moment, you will see clearly what is going on for you and you are in a position of empowerment. Instead of getting worried about something you have no control of, you become aware that you are beginning to worry and you can choose to stop. You can choose to focus on something more pleasant, like the present moment.
No matter what your situation is, there is always something pleasant in the present moment. Maybe it is a feeling of warm feet, a smell of vanilla, the sight of a bird, or the comfort of your own breath.
